The light and airy PickOne studio space is approximately 17 x 6 metres and located in the vibrant Coburg House Art Studios complex in the heart of Leith. The Open Access facility has been in part set up with the generous assistance of the Inches Carr Trust and Creative Scotland.

James is offering a dedicated open access studio space for weavers, specifically for recent graduates, where skills, techniques and collections/samples can be honed for private use or market. As well as providing a space with 24 hour studio access and contemporary weave equipment, mentoring/business advice will also be built into this service. The service is designed to give recent graduates an affordable and professional space with quality contemporary equipment to kickstart their creative practice.

Similarly the space can also be hired by more established weavers for periods self motivated residencies or for those that wish to have a weaving holiday in Edinburgh, Scotland. 

Participants will have access to the following
  • ​A dedicated 32 shaft Louet computerised Megado with a weaving width of 1.30metres, two back beams, both with sectional warping features
  • 5 reed sizes (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100)
  • A laptop utilising a Proweave software programme to run the Megado loom. Assistance/instruction will be given as part of the service
  • 4 and 8 shaft Ashford table looms - if required
  • 16 shaft harris loom - This loom can be hired as part of the package or separately see below.
  • Finishing facilities (access to a sewing machine, overlocker and washing machine)
  • Storage
  • Wifi
  • Desk space
  • Extensive library of subject specific literature
  • List of yarn suppliers
  • Basic art materials

Please note for obvious reasons weaving materials will not be offered as part of this service, but again I am happy to help with locating appropriate materials if required ahead of the booking.

Costs per calendar month or 4 week period.
Equipment hire/storage/heating/maintenance/admin - £350 (€386, ¥49570, AU$578, NZ$625, CAD$579, $455 converted prices correct as from August 2017)

​Additional 7 day blocks may be booked at £100 per 7 days.

The 16 shaft harris loom can be hired as part of the package with all the access as above or separately at a cost of £300

Booking of 3 months or more will be subject to a 10% discount for both looms.

An optional 7 hours mentoring a month can be built into this service, in accordance with the Scottish Artists Union rates  - £262.00. Mentoring input can be spread out over the duration of the booking. 

Additional mentoring will be charged at £35.00 an hour. This hourly rate will be applied if less than 7 hours is required.

For the last 17 years James and fellow textile designer Fiona Mackintosh run Concrete Wardrobe, a retail space for designer/makers, in the bustling area of Broughton Street, Edinburgh. If appropriate studio participants have the opportunity to market-test developments made whilst working from the PickOne Studios. This valuable experience can inform and educate on a range of points including aesthetics, functionality, pricing and relevance to changing markets.
